# Grading your diamonds

How to send a diamond with a Tracr ID to a grading lab using the Grading Integration Service ("GIS") to access additional features and efficiency.

The Grading Integration Service was designed to provide greater efficiency in the grading process by working directly with the labs to provide third party verified grading data to your Tracr record.

## Participating grading labs

* GIA
* Institute of Diamonds (formally IIDGR)

## Why should I send my Tracr ID to the grading lab?

* Grading labs will directly update your Tracr record with the grading report, inscription number(s) and all grading data including proportions, measurements and inclusion plotting (if applicable).
* Attach Tracr provenance to partner grading reports by accessing services such as GIA Prov-T.
* Only diamonds sent to participating labs will receive the additional grading page on Tracr.\
  Please see this sample of the grading page for a GIA Prov-T graded diamond: <https://search.tracr.com/nt3jg0wxt72dx5uuz145cb6p/grading>

## How does the Grading Integration Service work?

The integration works through three key steps: Verification, Validation, Update. We do this to ensure there are enough touchpoints between Tracr and the grading lab to be confident it is the same diamond before the grading lab updates the grading data on your behalf.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Verification

The verification step allows the lab to check that the diamond that you have submitted to the lab is the same diamond you have registered on Tracr. This is done using the data (shape, carat weight) that you upload onto Tracr.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Validation

The validation step compares your uploaded scan report on Tracr against the lab measurements.

If a diamond <mark style="color:$success;">**passes validation**</mark>, the diamond record can be updated.

If a diamond <mark style="color:$danger;">**fails validation**</mark> you can decide to:

* request the diamond be returned for you to rescan, and to resubmit following the same steps,
* continue with grading service without the update to Tracr and you upload the grading details manually post grading, or,
* remove the diamond from the grading process.
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Update

Once a diamond has passed the validation step, and the grading lab has provided you with the results, the lab can then upload the grading report, inscription number(s) and supporting metadata associated with the diamond.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## How to upload your polished diamonds to Tracr for grading?

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Upload your polished diamond using the current process ensuring to include the shape, carat weight and a processable scan report.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Submit the polished Tracr ID in the correct place when ordering the lab service.

Example scan reports:

* [Sarine XML](https://jcpackages.tracr.network/integration/demo_polished_1.xml)
* [Helium HTML](https://jcpackages.tracr.network/integration/example_helium.html)
  {% endstep %}
  {% endstepper %}

> You may need to select additional services from the laboratory.

## Partner Labs

### Gemological Institute of America (GIA)

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a nonprofit institute based in Carlsbad, California. It is dedicated to research and education in the field of gemology and the jewelry arts. Founded in 1931, GIA's mission is to protect buyers and sellers of gemstones by setting and maintaining the standards used to evaluate gemstone quality.

#### Prov-T, powered by Tracr™

GIA provides a direct link to Tracr provenance data via a QR code on their Dossier or Diamond Grading Report - an add on service called Provenance, powered by Tracr™ (GIA Prov-T).

**GIA Submission Instructions**

Submitting via CSS API Web Service to GIA

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

* You must request PROV-T in addition to DG or DOSS services.
* You must provide a valid Tracr\_ID as part of the create job query.
* Complete Job Creation as usual.
  {% endstep %}
  {% endstepper %}

Submitting via Excel Import File to GIA

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

* You must provide a valid Tracr\_ID in the correct column.
  {% endstep %}
  {% endstepper %}

**Known Issues and Workarounds**

1. Lab Eligibility
2. Unsupported Shapes

**1. Lab Eligibility**

A diamond needs to be a live polished diamond, with a polished scan report in a format Tracr can process.

**2. Unsupported Shapes**

For the particular diamond shapes listed below in the "Actual Shape" column, the integration requires the participant to submit the shape to Tracr and GIA in the specific format described in the table below. We're actively working to support these additional shapes so that you won't need to follow this table in future.

The shapes currently supported by the integration are: Cushion, Emerald, Heart, Marquise, Oval, Pear, Princess, Radiant, Round.

If your diamond is not one of the supported shapes above, please follow the guidelines below to submit the diamond to the lab:

| Actual Shape | Upload it to Tracr as | Upload it to GIA as | Graded Shape will appear as |
| -------------- | --------------------- | ------------------- | -------------------------------------- |
| Modified Round | Round                 | Round               | Modified Round                         |
| Princess       | Princess              | Square              | Princess                               |
| Asscher        | Emerald               | Emerald             | Asscher                                |
| Radiant        | Radiant               | Square              | Radiant                                |
| Rectangle      | Princess              | Rectangle           | Rectangle                              |
| European Cut   | Round                 | Round               | Old European Brilliant                 |
| Square         | Princess or Radiant   | Square              | Square                                 |

### De Beers Institute of Diamonds (IoD)

Utilising over 130 years of experience, De Beers Institute of Diamonds exclusively grade only natural and untreated diamonds. Their grading combines 21st century technology and techniques with the leading industry standards. This combination of innovative grading systems and transparent published standards, ensures unparalleled accuracy and global consistency in their grading.

#### Known Issues and Workarounds

* IoD are currently using an earlier version of the Grading Integration Service which does not update the metadata (shape and 4C's) to your Tracr record; it only adds the grading report and the inscription number.
* Participants are recommended to check and update the Tracr record of their diamond post grading to ensure the IoD grading data on Tracr matches the IoD grading report 4C's.
* IoD will transition soon to GIS V2 and we will update documentation once this is deployed.

Submitting via Excel Import File to IOD

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

1. Login to IoD Client Portal to download the updated Import file: <https://client.debeers.com/login?ReturnUrl=%2F>
   {% endstep %}

{% step %}
2\. Fill in the Import file and make sure to provide a valid Tracr\_ID.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Tracr recommends to unlock the diamond before submission to the grading lab to ensure a smooth and efficient process.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Why am I seeing 'Processing Scan Report' status as failed?</summary>

This could be because the shape declared in Tracr isn't on our supported list, or the uploaded scan report isn't valid for the shape submitted, or a combination of both.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.tracr.com/tracr-articles/grading-your-diamonds.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
